Turkey Run Fun with the Family

Melissa and I decided to take the kids to Turkey Run for their first experience there.  We both remember our parents taking us there when we were kids and wanted the kids to see what it was like.  Now if you would have told me a year ago that a day walking trails was fun I would have thought you were nuts.  A lot can change in a year.  Our idea of fun is now getting out and getting healthy.  We want to teach our kids this too.  We want them to be active and not just sit around and watch TV all the time.  There is more to life than just TV.  What better day than today to get out and do just that. 

We decided to take trail 3.  It's a 1.5 mile trail that's pretty rugged on their favorite thing.  Along water.  You should have seen the looks on their faces when they saw the water.  Priceless.  They're reaction, "We get to walk in it??"  Oh, yes.  Let the fun begin.  It is so beautiful on this trail with all the rocks, water, and scenery.  The interesting thing on this trail was we had to go down 3 sets of ladders.  Pretty scary especilly with Kelly our 4 year old.  I told Kelly to hang on to me as tight as she could.  She did and I took us both down the ladders safely.  Also a little scary for Melissa which has a slight fear of heights.  Melissa did awesome overcoming her fear and making it down the ladders with no problem.  Had to have been those awesome trail shoes she was wearing. We also got to go across an awesome suspension bridge which you can bounce on.  Just an amazing adventure. 

We finished up the day with trail 6 and got to see a cool log cabin along the way.  We ended up going about 2.5 miles total today.  Kids were tired but the amazing thing about it was they said they had a lot of fun and wanted to go back again.  Such a fantastic day with my family.  Sometimes being a run nerd isn't all about running as fast as you can.  You can still get in an awesome workout by spending time with the ones you love.  No matter how you do it just get out there and get heart healthy.  Spending time with family is the best kind of heart healthy you can have.
